UX Research | Wireframes | Mobile

This project was created as part of UX Design course at Netcraft Acadmey.

We were instructed to design a user experience for an interface, in any field we are interested in, while implementing the UX principles which were taught in class; from user and market research, through defining personas and use-cases, and finally to designing wireframes for main scenarios using the interface.

the story

My life revolves a lot around foods and restaurants. I love speaking with my friends about amazing restaurants I have visited, or horrible service I have received, and above all - my social medias feed is full of posts showing delicious dishes.

the problem

Recommendations for delightful restaurants are easy to find - be it via websites, socials medias, or friends.

But what happens in the moment of truth when we need to make a decision and choose a dish?

We can stare at the menu for hours and hope that someone else would make the best choice for us.

When I was in college and worked as a telephone representative in a restaurant, I usually encountered two types of customers:

The ones who know exactly what they want to order, and the ones that are absolutely clueless.

Eventually they made a choice based on my recommendations, while still having some hesitations....

How big is the dish? Will I find it tasty and satisfying?

the solution

An interface that would help the user make a decision:

Where should he eat and which dishes should he order?

Based on today's technologies, the interface will work with a recommendation system, that would recommend the most suitable dishes for the user, according to his personal taste, budget, and history.

user research

In order to design the most effective experience for the potential users, I had to get a better understanding of who they are,

what they currently have, and what they might need.

I wrote a list of questions which I found relevant for the Israeli market, created a survey on Google forms, and shared it on my social media profiles.

Here are some of the results I received:

who is the user?

what is important for them?

what currently helps them?

PERSONAs

PERSONAS3.jpg

Based on my research I distinguished four groups of users, and named each one according to its 'relationship' with food.

Wants value for money

Is active on social medias

Loves aesthetic dishes

Likes tasting new flavours

The user...

market competitors

On my market research I found several mobile applications for restaurant recommendations:

Yelp is a popular App that inspired me greatly. Unfortunately, it is not available in Israel and does not focus on dishes

during research the "popular dishes" feature was not included).

TripAdvisor is based on user ratings and reviews but focuses mostly on recommendations for tourists.

Savory is the only app which focuses on dish recommendation, but it is based on ratings rather than on the user's personal taste.

Easy shows recommendations for restaurants and other business, but is focused on and limited to the Israeli market.

So what makes                                                 stand out?

Users will receive recommendations for dishes, whether they are already at a certain restaurant or not.

The interface will be personalized and customized for the users’ personal taste and behavior.

The App will be based or ratings and reviews, with emphasis on the activities and ratings of the users’ friends.

Suitable for the Israeli mentality- reviews will be 'short and sweet'

customize profile

When first signing in to the App, users may fill in a three-stage form, in order to define their personal tastes and preferences. They may also skip this part and customize it later through their profile settings. The recommendation system will be based on these settings, and future results will be based also on users’ ratings, reviews and wish list.

search for a dish

Users may search dishes according to keywords or suggestions. They will receive results that match their profile and which have been reviewed by their friends. Users can filter them by size, price, location and more. When finding a dish they want, they can order it from the restaurant or save it in their wish list for their next visit.

browse restaurant menu

When users plan to go to a restaurant, or if they are already there, they will see dishes that match their profile, and great meals their friends have had. They may also browse the menu and see in each category which dishes will suit their taste best.
